2021.12.06 01:40 Mafic_ Why does my cat want aggressive cuddles at the weirdest times?

I have an eight year old calico kitty. She's not usually super affectionate until she really, really wants cuddles. Like for instance, right after I take a shower. Or when I'm trying to sleep. We're talking about a ton of purring, rubbing, headbutting, etc. Not just people either; rubbing on pretty much everything I own. She is fixed, so she's not in heat. I'm not really concerned, but just curious if something triggers her to do this.

2021.12.06 01:40 Weary-Apartment3468 Why do I have such a hard time expressing myself vocally?

I(21) was adopted at 7 by an Australian couple. From then on I only spoke English and forgot my mother tongue. Not sure if this helps but though it important to mention just incase.
Anyway, on any given day, I struggle to form grammatically correct sentences and i stumbled over my words. It's so bad that it surprises me when I actually get thru a sentence without having issues. I also forget my words quite often. The expression "its on the tip of my tongue" just about sums up my conversations. I haven't spoken about it to anyone but I'm sure it's not just in my head.
Im wondering if there's something wrong with me. Does anyone else experience this? Is this a sign of bad mental health? Can I improve it somehow?

2021.12.06 01:40 thro0away12 What keeps you fulfilled outside of work?

I'm 30 years old and soon to likely change my job again-my third job in a span of four years. To be honest, my career hasn't been quite "smooth sailing", I have both a professional degree and a masters and was initially very passionate and hard working in college and am just a versatile person interested in many things even outside of an academic sense. I spent a decent amount of time in my early career unemployed unfortunately because I couldn't find a job, I decided to get a masters to expand my skillset. I was pretty happy in my masters program: I met awesome people, was learning a lot and made a ton of friends. Once I graduated though, I had a number of weird and unfortunate work experiences:

  1. Experience one: got called for two interviews for a position which I knew was a good fit for, later the lady tricked me into working a part time job instead which she got me started on before handling the logistics to pay me, gave me no directions and when I'd show her my work, she'd become easily frustrated and disappointed and started to become condescending towards me. When weeks went by without pay, I asked them when they'd pay me. It turned out HR messed up my paperwork and I had to travel very far to get drug testing and other screening done for a second time, costing me $ in transportation and ubers which they did not pay me for. In the middle of this "part-time" gig, the lady re-posted the position I originally applied for. I finally left this position and got compensated 3 months later. This was at a world renowned academic institution.
  2. Experience two: Around the same time as experience one, I got an interview for another position. They went with another person, however they reached out to me to let me know they may have a second opening because the first person could have their work divided up. After my interview with them, I was receiving competing offers but really liked this job. When I asked them if I could get a decision soon, they let me know they offered me a job and so I turned down the other decisions. About two days later, the person hiring me spoke to HR and said it turned out the "position they had in mind" is not possible and they realized they do not have the capacity to hire me for this position and "wished me a best of luck in my endeavors"...again, this was at the same world-renowned academic institution.
  3. Experience three: I got a FT job interview at the same academic institution I have been mentioning. The lady asked me for 3 letters of recommendations, test scores, transcripts and the such as if I was applying for graduate school all over again when this was simply a job. After receiving them, she interviewed me and asked me about a C grade on my transcript to which I told her I was going through a difficult period and struggled with the class in question. She told me this position requires "strong academic capabilities" (BS after working in this industry for 4 years now). After submitting 3 letters of recommendations and not hearing back, I asked her the status of my application. She said "I received your letter from" [a company I never worked for, she confused it for the organization I did work for] but I did not like one letter I received from you at all. Please ask somebody else to write it. I gave up on the was becoming too rigid for my liking. She ended up offering me the position but I turned it down when Experience 2 told me they'd offer me the job.
  4. Experience four: Finally, I got a full time job at another world renowned academic institution in another city. While I was looking for apartments, I actually ended up speaking to a potential roommate who worked at this place and it turned out she worked for my boss and had bad things to say-she left after 3 months. I tried applying for other jobs frantically but after not hearing back, I decided to just go with it. Initially, when I started my job and was on probation, they had me do a ton of data entry which couldn't be automated. This was above my credentials and skills, but I didn't complain at first since it took me so many struggles to get this job. They finally had me start on the analytical work they primarily hired me for and once I completed that, I received praise from my boss so things were going well. However, my project manager started to then set unrealistic expectations for me and find ways to pin the blame for everything on me: she told me I need to do more to "communicate" with my boss. I worked in another building, a 10 minute walk away, and when I asked if he best responds to e-mails or phones, she said neither and that in order for me to meet with him I have to stand outside his office to "grab" him. I told her this would eat away my time getting work done, because my desk is in another building. She agreed it would be challenging but I would need to "figure it out". I had a meeting with my boss once, where he showed up 3 whole hours late. After he came, all he told me was "I don't know who is holding up this project but we need to get it done". I asked if I could have a laptop so that I can manage working in between buildings. She said a laptop would be a huge expense (they had a research budget of $7 million) and that I would need strong justification to have a laptop. There were others working in the same position as me with other bosses and their bosses told them they could get any laptop they wanted. I was told that "the research and the progress of research rests on my hands". When they released a draft of a manuscript being published, they didn't even put my name on it at first. When a fellow researcher told me, I had to immediately tell them my name is missing while all my work is on it. They started making us come on Saturdays for meetings. On one Saturday right before Christmas, my boss asked me how the data entry is going. I had earlier asked my project manager how they plan to use this data for analysis as it will help me understand the goals of the project. She had been very reluctant to share anything and said "that will be the discretion of the boss, for now just enter it as I tell you". I told him because of the analytical work, I'm a little behind and asked if he would be open to hiring a college student or recent graduate to help me with the work. After providing this suggestion, he BLEW UP on me and asked me how I had the audacity to make this suggestion to him and then started threatening to fire me. I was already in the process of applying to new jobs and finally left a few months later. I discovered the published paper on my own a few months later, it had incorrect credentials because they never bothered asking me what my credentials were.
Finally, I'm at my current job, which required another move to a different city. This is the first time I have been treated like a professional. I work with diverse, friendly co-workers and I've learned a lot here. The only issue is that I work in government and things are extremely inefficient and slow. Within one year of my job, I had already started feeling I am not learning anything new and felt like people were dumping their nitty gritty responsibilities on me. The good thing though was one of my bosses recommended me for a promotion. One year later, due to slow processes, this promotion still hasn't gone into effect. By this point in my career and life, I'm getting pretty jaded by the concept of work: I used to approach jobs starry eyed and passionate, but now I just want to get paid well and work somewhere reasonable. I have learned great technical skills and know I can be paid more. My life has basically become about changing jobs to keep getting better tasks/good pay, but I am so tired. I'm tired of the way I've been treated, I'm tired moving. I don't have really close friendships and have a complicated relationship with some family members I was once close to. I have hobbies sometimes outside of work (occasionally exercise, crafting, reading, photography, etc.), I like watching movies and TV shows and going to concerts but after I while I just feel very jaded sometimes and feel like doing nothing. I got an offer for a new job which will pay me more and is a completely brand new position, but already the HR process has been so disorganized. I have spoken to an old friend from university who works there who told me that since the position is new, only time will tell what it's like but she told me if I already know that this won't be really organized then I already have the right idea about the company. It is also located in a different city but I am pushing for the possibility of keeping it remote because at the very least, I live in a very big city which has random things to do for a single person with hardly any friends to not get depressed. In the meantime, I am trying to upgrade my current skills and hope that maybe down the line I can get way better jobs than the ones I've currently had an experience with, but I want to hear from others how you keep yourself happy and fulfilled especially when the grind can get challenging.

2021.12.06 01:40 Purple-Drink Some stats about laptop cooling for Omen 15 owners

I did a 20 minute Furmark test on my HP Omen 15 just to see the effectiveness of laptop on desk, cooling pad off/on, and the preset fan settings in the Omen hub. Pretty interesting results.

Omen Laptop 15-en1xxx
AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
OMEN Gaming Hub Performance Control set to Balanced
until the last 5 minute run where it is set to Performance.
Cooling Pad for testing: Targus AWE61 16" Dual Fan Chill Mat
Heat Maker: FurMark (4K Resolution / 8xMSAA)
GPU maintained 99% utilization entire time.
Test ran for 5 minutes with no cooling pad on a flat desk.
Cooling pad then applied while test still running without turning on cooling pad.
Cooling pad then turned on for last 5 minutes.
Laptop set to Performance mode for last 5 minute run.
Test 1 : Flat desk no cooling pad
CPU 71c / GPU 76c
Test 2 : Cooling pad applied but turned off
CPU 61c / GPU 67c
(Laptop balanced fan settings actually lowered fan speeds while
still maintaining a lower temperature. Appears to be a default fan
step up / down around 70c.)
Test 3 : Cooling Pad Turned On
CPU 60c / GPU 66c
Test 4 : Performance Fan Mode Enabled
CPU 62c / GPU 65c
Conclusion: A cooling pad will help your temperatures, but having your laptop elevated off of a flat surface will give you the majority of the laptop cooling pads benefit. Once the laptop was up and running at full temperature for the final run I switched the fan settings in Omen hub to Performance. Despite making a lot more fan noise there was an increase in CPU and 1c decrease in GPU temperatures. I believe this is just margin or error type situation here. Even the laptop cooling pad going from off / on provides a negligible difference that could be margin of error. Obviously having the fans set at a static speed would give the most accurate display of effectiveness but I wanted to give data that was more real world as I assume people are either using the balanced or performance setting as opposed to a set fan speed. I would personally make sure your laptop is elevated, the bottom intake area is not covered, and set your fan control to balanced. This will provide you with great cooling and much less noise compared to Performance.

I plan on getting a "fancier" cooling pad that can output higher amounts of airflow and testing again although I don't expect to see much of a difference as I don't think the laptop will have any major benefit from any extra airflow other than lifting the base and allowing the bottom intake to properly breathe. I also plan on doing some tests with the fans set at a static speed as well as doing a thermal paste comparison.

As to why Performance mode provided little to no benefit. My theory is the compact size of the heatsinks / copper tubes / airflow routing means there is only so much heat that can be dissipated at any given time. Regardless of airflow the heatsinks are actually gathering and dissipating heat as quickly as possible even at the lower fan speeds. But if you are using the laptop on a flat surface and restricting the airflow to the bottom intake, the increased fan speed from performance mode probably would make a noticeable difference. Maybe something to test in the future.

It appears as though this is a well designed machine and given proper airflow to the bottom intake even under a full GPU load this laptop is designed to keep itself far from thermal throttling.
