2021.10.16 05:16 Some_Personality8379 Would trauma-based powers make the gap between Superhero Magic systems and Wizards Magic systems even more smaller?

For starters, the gap between superheroes and wizards is already small. Mutants and Mages have way more similarities than differences. I can go all day. But the biggest difference that has always separated them so far is fiction. Was the fact that magic was always something characters had to learn like a skill set. And superpowers like the ones in the Marvel Universe were always something where the characters had to be born with special genetics or have altered DNA to have.
Then we have trauma-based powers. These are the powers that activate when characters are in situations where they are under so much stressed and pressure. That they activate powers. Stories like Worm have triggers that have the same function. Even Marvel X Men had Mutants go through puberty to trigger or activate their powers or abilities. Trauma powers are a little bit different from birth powers or altered powers. The characters aren't born or gifted powers from an outside force. They awakening their powers during tough situations.
Would trauma-based powers make the small gap between superpowers and magic even more smaller? Trauma powers can be identical to learn powers. Sure there is a manner difference between a character who is training and a character who is just stressed out or pump up on adrenalin lol. But again this difference is the manner and just another small block that is struggling from making superpowers and magic overlap.
For example, women can see their baby under a car and tap into hysterical strength to lift the car and save their baby. Another woman can do 100 push-ups every day for 3 years and she ends up saving her baby who is trap under a car by lifting the car one day.
In that example, the trauma women and the trained women pretty much have the same hysterical strength. Sure a different method was used. One was trained and the other was just stressed lol. But at the end of the day, both women are pushing their bodies past their limit without any special mutations/genetics, or altered DNA. The method of both may be a little different. But the results are the same.
Another example or analogy is DBZ Goten Super Saiyan on his first try because of a simple generic rage boost. While it took his father Goku years to turn into a Super Saiyan. I know this analogy sounds weird. But that's the only analogy I can think of. I was going to use an even more worse DBZ analogy. About Goku learning the Kamehameha more faster than Master Roshi lol 😂.
But in conclusion. What do you guys think about it?

2021.10.16 05:16 killerbeast4 Xbox 360 Modding Help

I recently got an Xbox 360 Fat (Falcon) with a fairly recent firmware. I want to mod it, I looked through the get started post but I wasn't able to follow it since a lot of the links are old. Could someone that knows what they're doing direct me to the right place?
I also have a 360 Slim. Is that easier to mod?
I am looking into modding to backup and play my games as well as experience older dashboards.

Thank you

2021.10.16 05:16 cedaro0o Essay by Greg Heffron - Reflections on Shambhala's Origin Story. Passed along as per his request, see last line.

I’ve been thinking about this letter for a few years now. I’ve even written several versions. I was going to go into the history of the vajrayana, the history of Surmang and the Trungpas, and all that. I was also going to go into my personal history of encountering the provocative and at times shocking history of our lineage.
But frankly — who cares?
Few care about history, and fewer still value how it shapes our current situation. And nobody really needs to know what I did or didn’t experience. So I’ll set that aside.
What I want to ask is: what happened???
I know the narratives, shared across sangha, in the NY Times, etc: “when the Sakyong took over, he seemed like he was toning things down from the days of his father and the Regent” — so it seemed to some, based on the view from outside the court — “but it turned out his behavior was off the charts shocking and harmful. And especially to women.”
And since then, his letters of apology have come across to many as…understated. Vocal critics call them “wildly out of touch” and “in denial.”
So those who feel this narrative is the real truth aren’t satisfied, and are angry that he’s ‘not addressing the real harms he caused.’
To say that again: the issue is the past harm, and also it not being addressed.
Often, this narrative concludes: “Trungpa Rinpoche would *never* have done things like this.”
So of course — based on this narrative — people are irate and alarmed and demoralized.
No matter anyone’s views, we can all agree the last few years in the sangha have been filled with anguish, anger, skepticism, heartbreak, and anxiety.
So now, I ask you please to contemplate to Shambhala’s ‘origin story.’
Why? How is that even relevant?
Because it suggests an entirely different narrative.
Trungpa (a true mahasiddha, in my humble opinion) famously crashed a car while driving drunk. He famously half-paralyzed himself doing so. He was sleeping with Lady Diana at 15 (according to her), and later with many dozens of close students and newcomers alike.
Some think his behavior was always pain free. But Diana’s book Dragon Thunder is candid enough to show us it wasn’t. I’m picturing her running and weeping the first time she found him with another woman — no talk ahead of time about non-monogamy. (Or the moment of famously forgetting her name on their wedding night.)
There are other stories with VCTR that go beyond just startling or laugh-worthy. The dog story. The cat story. The Merwin Incident. Stories that make you react viscerally (even if you love Trungpa). This includes stories that were written up in major publications in the US, and provoked shocked questions from reporters — even in the wild 70s and 80s.
As one senior Trungpa/Sakyong student said to me, “If the Vidyadhara had done what he did in modern times, there would have been lawsuits.”
I think of one story from a Zen friend, of a woman friend of hers that VCTR brought into his office during an open house in Boulder the early 80s. She stopped showing up for open houses — and avoided our sangha thereafter — because of what happened with him that night.
Like it or not, many found Trungpa to be less beneficent than most of us do.
And I want to say that that’s fine if people feel that way. If someone just found out about that history, they’d be half-mad to be 100% fine with it. I know that I wasn’t fine with it when I found out.
And if someone feels deeply uncomfortable, there are other marvelous Buddhist traditions without (quite) as much shocking behavior, where you’re likely to have an experience which doesn’t involve processing how to understand massive amounts of drinking and sex.
Many Buddhist traditions would condemn a teacher like Trungpa.
We didn’t.
Our sangha defended him against torrents of criticism from the outside. There wasn’t just tacit approval. We *actively* approved.
I think of my Level 5, where the (fantastic) Director told a startling story about Trungpa Rinpoche at the closing banquet, then raised his glass. “To the Vidyadhara!” We all toasted. Myself included — heartily — since by then I’d accepted his shocking behavior as part of our culture. Like so many of you had, and have.
And so…
I want to consider an alternate narrative for our current situation.
That the Sakyong was specifically trained by his father in outrageous behavior.
I’ve heard of him bringing SMR (while a teenager) into parties and encouraging the future Sakyong to get drunk and have sex with women his father procured for him. If “Everything Trungpa did was a teaching,” wasn’t this too a teaching?
Is this awful that Trungpa did this? Shocking?
I can think of an American Lama (Lama Lena) talking in a recent youtube video about the Tibetan view of sexuality. Which is that it’s “like eating chocolate.”
Many nomadic cultures don’t have the same views of sex that we do. Like it or not, they just don’t consider it so special. Or exclusive. As Trungpa himself said, there is not even a marriage ceremony in his home culture. (According to him, the woman just hangs her things up in the man’s yurt, and if it doesn’t work out, she takes them and leaves.)
So the root question is: did the Sakyong take Shambhala off a cliff into drunkenness, sexual debauchery and mayhem?
I don’t see signs that he took us anywhere we hadn’t been for a long time. Including students sometimes walking away with the perception they’d had a strongly negative experience.
SMR inherited a fair bit of sex, drinking and shocking behavior. After all, the Regent Crisis happened just a few years before he took over.
And gradually — over several decades of time — he managed to tone it down. Way way WAY down.
The last two accusations against SMR were 2003 and 2011. By the time 2018 happened, there had been years of quiet. Everyone agrees that 2011 was the last incident we’ve heard about. (See the Wickwire Holm investigation about the 2015 accusation, which — unlike the others — seems questionable.)
Perhaps you think SMR drunkenly kissing a student and saying she has “beautiful legs” is really awful, harmful and abusive (2011).
Okay. Now ask yourself:
Is it so much *more* shocking than paralyzing car crashes and having sex with 15 year old Diana?
I totally ‘get’ my non-Shambhala friends who think our whole lineage was pretty much ‘basically bad’ from the late-60s forward. Trungpa Rinpoche. The Regent. The Sakyong. All of it.
Bad bad and more bad.
Let’s be honest. Even if our friends and family like us, they think we’re a bit nuts. (“So the son ended up to be just like his father — what a shock!” You can picture the eye rolls…)
Even if I disagree completely, there’s a coherency to their view.
And most of us knew the history — enough of it. We were part of all this, right?
I remember when a little sangha I’d been Director of showed “Crazy Wisdom” as a fundraiser — with drunken car crashes and 15yo Diana just part of the mix in that (fantastic) film. We also read Diana’s book at a local bookstore to help promote the book, and our Center. Nothing was hidden.
So getting to my point, I want to propose a narrative that better fits the accusations against the Sakyong we can all agree happened — and with the history of our entire lineage from 1969 forward.
My proposed narrative:
The Sakyong inherited a whirling tornado of intensity, which included lots of sex and drinking for decades — and tears and anguish, with people occasionally fleeing the community, never to return.
Was SMR’s behavior a part of this?
Absolutely.
VCTR began this tidal wave in the late-60s and rode it through his death (alcohol playing a role in his dying, quite likely). The Regent rode it forward. Then the Sakyong…
And when SMR’s drinking began to get as intense as his father’s around 2003, and once he got feedback from close students that it was becoming too much, he began to tone it down.
Culture had changed.
But SMR didn’t just tone himself down. He toned down the sangha. Much of it before I even showed up.
In my 22 years in Shambhala, I’ve seen someone get sloppy drunk a dozen times — typically single individuals with an obvious drinking addiction.
After a Warrior Assembly in 2010, driving home, we counted that 6 people out of 120 actually had sex. Far from the image of a ‘drunken orgy,’ the closing party had been like something out of a Lutheran High School camp, with us telling jokes around a fire while some couples snuggled.
Then, in 2015, at a vajrayana program, I brought up a famous story of drunken partying from back in the 70s — and was told *in no uncertain terms* that the Sakyong wanted us to leave that baggage behind. Those times were over, and he didn’t want us to glorify them any longer.
Then, in 2018, #MeToo hit.
The tidal wave hit a barrier. And began to sweep backwards…
Culture was in a specific place, with serious harms finally being addressed. (Something I’m hugely in favor of.) And with how it hit our sangha, the ‘Bad-SMR’ narrative got — somewhat understandably — frozen into consciousness.
Yet only *inside* Shambhala is it plausible to think that VCTR was ‘sacred’ and the Sakyong ‘profane.’
I’ve hesitated saying this so directly, because I didn’t want to knock anyone off their path. It’s a risky move. Someone might decide that VCTR was ‘bad too’ (a narrative some hold as true).
I personally think that isn’t accurate either. I think VCTR being so wild was an important thing at the time.
I also think SMR being wild at the beginning was important.
I don’t consider myself a ‘mindless devotional robot.’ My support for the Sakyong comes as the result of a very clear set of decisions I made over years of contemplating VCTR’s wildness.
And I think it’s understandable — considering the monumental nature of the #metoo phenomena — that we got wound up in a knot of collective trauma, where what we’ve been saying about this situation is not based in what we can all agree happened.
Can we untie this trauma knot by being more honest about ourselves and our history?
I’m also glad the Sakyong and our community moved beyond the wild phase. And that our sangha is kinder, more accountable and less startling — especially to newcomers.
Doubt that anything changed? The idea of a woman walking into an open house being invited to have sex with *any* teacher — not to mention the lineage holder — has been nearly unthinkable for decades.
That’s great.
Could such a change have happened sooner?
Maybe. Who knows…
Nobody knows when it’s time for culture to shift. Until it does.
It did.
We have.
And we’re still the same lineage that may well be led by the first ever female Sakyong — aka one of the Jetsunmas — who would be one of the only female lineage holders in modern Tibetan Buddhism.
So let’s move forward.
Let’s create a new future for Shambhala. Let’s do it together.
Sincerely,
Greg Heffron
